
Roseburg and Richland/Hanford have won Baseball Northwest’s 2009 High School Fall Ball State Championships on October 25th. Roseburg won the Oregon/SW Washington League with a 5-3 win over North Eugene at Oregon State Univ. and Hanford/Richland won the East Washington Championship at Hanford High School with an 8-4 win over the Baseball Northwest Tri-Cities team. Over 50 teams competed in the two state leagues featuring 10 games to determine the league champion winners and the entries in the state championships.
The two Oregon/SW Washington semi-final games were very exciting, very well played and ended in walk off manner as Cameron Newell two run single won it for Roseburg in the bottom of the 7th inning, 5-3 over Kelso. For Roseburg—Josh Graham had two hits including an rbi double, and Vince Ampi had an rbi single. Freshman Connor Newell setup the 7th inning with a double before brother Cameron won it. Chris Case allowed pitched 6 shutout innings before being scored on in the 7th. For Kelso—Cobi Johnson gave Kelso the lead in the top of the 7th before Roseburg won it in their half. Senior right-hander Brandon Middleton held Roseburg scoreless until the 6th.
It took 12 innings to decide the other semi-final as North Eugene defeated McMinnvile 2-1. Senior catcher Jonny Lari’s fourth hit of the game won it for North in the bottom of the 12th. Andrew Moore and Garrett Mills held McMinnville to 4 hits. Taylor Smith’s rbi single plated McMinville’s only run. McMinnville pitchers. Zak Pearson, Brandon Jones, and Taylor Smith held North to one run before the 12th inning win. Many top defensive plays were turned in by each team.
In the final—the offense caught up to the pitching with each team getting more 8 hits or more. For Roseburg—Vince Ampi and Derek sophomore Jared Priestley pitched the championship win. Eight Roseburg players contributed hits. For North Eugene Chad Hise had two run scoring singles.
At Hanford—Richland/Hanford reached the final with by beating Yakima Valley 6-0 in one semi-final. Jake Siefken and Colin Serkowski combined to allow just one hit with 7 strikeouts. Connor Moore provided the offense with two hits and Dalton Johnson had a bases loaded triple.
The other semi-final was won by BBNW Tri-Cities 8-1 over the Yakima Nationals. Blake Raekes had two hits and two rbi while Joey Flores pitched the complete game win with 5 strikeouts and chipped in 3 hits.
The Championship game featured Richland/Hanford’s Travis Fuller pitching a complete game allowing 4 hits with 8 strikeouts. Connor Moore, and Corey Davis each had two hits and Jake Siefken had the big hit—a bases loaded two out single that scored the drove in three. For Tri-Cities—Nathan Webner had three hits.
